What are "Conflict Diamonds"?
Conflict Diamonds are diamonds that originate from areas controlled by warring forces or which otherwise are in armed conflict against an internationally recognized government. The diamonds mined from these regions are illegally used to fund military action against a legitimate government. The trading of these diamonds in war-torn regions particularly in central or western Africa funds violence, illegal child labor or war.
The Kimberley Process
In July 2000, the global diamond industry declared its zero tolerance policy towards conflict diamonds to the international community. Dedicated to preventing conflict diamonds from entering the mainstream rough diamond market and completely eliminating the trade of any and all conflict diamonds, they worked closely with the United Nations, governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as Global Witness and Partnership Africa Canada to create the Kimberley Process Certification System. This system was formally adopted in 2003 and guards against conflict diamonds, both rough and polished, from entering the legitimate diamond supply chain. This system ensures that any diamond originating from any participating country does not finance a rebel group, that every diamond export is accompanied by a Kimberley Process numbered certificate, and that no diamond is imported from, or exported to, a non-member of the scheme.
Our assurance to you is that our diamonds do not fund or promote conflict in the world. Along with the global diamond industry, Victor Canera has a zero-tolerance policy towards conflict diamonds. Victor Canera is also one of a rare breed of e-tailers that can control diamond production from rough to polished diamond. This control of the supply chain allows us to guarantee that our diamonds are from ethical sources and regions such as from Canada. We only purchase diamonds through the largest and most respected suppliers and traders who, like us, proudly adhere to and enforce the standards established by the Kimberley Process.
Our mission is to promote and encourage a more ethical, transparent, and sustainable diamond industry. We hold true to our values of awareness and transparency by carefully tracking our diamonds' origins. We go beyond the usual standards to guarantee that our diamonds are mined from ethically and environmentally responsible sources.
