Carat

Carat is the unit by which gemstones are weighed, divided into 100 "points." A diamond's rarity increases exponentially with carat weight, making carat the most influential of the 4Cs on a stone's value.

Cut

Cut measures how well a diamond reflects light back to the viewer, maximizing three optical effects: brilliance (white-light return), dispersion or fire (light split into spectral colors), and scintillation (the flashes and contrast seen as the stone moves). A well-proportioned diamond appears bright and alive; a poorly cut one looks dull and lifeless.

Color

Diamond color is graded from D (colorless) through Z (light yellow); beyond Z a stone is considered "fancy color" and assessed differently. The distinctions can be so subtle they're invisible to the untrained eye, yet they strongly influence a diamond's overall quality and price.

Clarity

Clarity describes a diamond's natural inclusions (internal) and blemishes (surface) — like a fingerprint, no two diamonds are alike. Grades run from Flawless (FL) down through Included (I3). A diamond needn't be flawless to be beautiful: eye-clean stones in the VS1–SI1 range offer excellent value and appearance.
